{"id":116,"date":"2012-08-08T11:21:59","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T15:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=116"},"modified":"2012-08-31T00:38:28","modified_gmt":"2012-08-31T04:38:28","slug":"my-diabetic-perks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=116","title":{"rendered":"My Diabetic Perks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok the title is a stretch. \u00a0Like a HUGE stretch. \u00a0I wrote the list below as I struggled with the JDRF walk letter I STILL have not written (11 years organizing a walk team and this is the furthest behind I have ever been). \u00a0There are a bunch of other things for this list but for now, this will do.<\/p>\n<p>My Recent Diabetic Perks:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/sickly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-127\" title=\"sickly\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/sickly-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I am not scared of hospitals. \u00a0Nope, not me. \u00a0When a friend or family member is ill or hospitalized, any fear I have, I can shake it off.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in scary hospital situations myself.\u00a0 I know what a helpless feeling it is.\u00a0 I will move mountains to alleviate that fear for someone else. \u00a0I&#8217;m like a candy-striper gone a little rogue. \u00a0I know the power of being pleasant at a hospital. \u00a0Saying, &#8220;thank you&#8221; works wonders.<\/li>\n<li>I appreciate my life, greatly.\u00a0 I know just how incredibly fortunate I am.\u00a0 Insulin was discovered only 90 years ago (crazy right? Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breakthrough-Elizabeth-Discovery-Insulin-Medical\/dp\/0312648707\">Breakthough<\/a>). \u00a0Many huge insulin refinements have happened within my own life time (also my college application essay was about how I&#8217;m a drug addict&#8230; an Insulin Junky&#8230; I got into a bunch of colleges. \u00a0Maybe it was a good point?).<\/li>\n<li>I know how to read all sorts of medical tests without any medical training.\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right. \u00a0One example, I have had enough lasering within my eyes, and reviewed enough photos of my eye interior, to have established an intimate relationship with my peepers.\u00a0 My doctors even give me interior eye photos to take home with me. Eye pics? \u00a0Yep, cool.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Starburst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-124\" title=\"Starburst\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Starburst-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Starburst-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Starburst.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a>I (almost) always have snacks with me (if we ignore <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=61\">that whole Gettin&#8217; Low incident<\/a>).\u00a0 I\u2019m the friend when you need a sugar-rush.\u00a0 My refrigerator is 3 deep in juice boxes. You need juice, I\u2019m your lady.\u00a0 I even keep a juice box next to my bed. If you are interested in developing cavities, stop by. Today&#8217;s purse assortment includes glucose tabs and Starburst.<\/li>\n<li>I auditioned for a TV commercial.\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 I auditioned for a commercial for the manufacturer of my insulin pump.\u00a0 They only wanted \u201cpumpers\u201d who used their product. \u00a0I LOVE my pump and it sounded like an adventure. \u00a0The whole thing was a complete disaster, I couldn\u2019t remember the lines, and I got a case of the giggles so bad I am pretty sure I almost peed my pants. \u00a0They gave me a zillion tries.\u00a0 The lines were ridiculous and the complete opposite of how I would ever naturally speak but it provided us with hours of laughter and teasing.\u00a0 M was there, you can ask him.\u00a0 I never would have had the opportunity and the fun story to tell, if I weren&#8217;t diabetic.<\/li>\n<li>I am good at sucking-up and then fighting with health insurance companies. I will pour on the charm, and when\/if that doesn&#8217;t work, yes, I will fight. \u00a0I will fight and fight. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I play fair, but don&#8217;t deny me my rights because I will pull out ninja moves you didn&#8217;t even know existed.<\/li>\n<li>I exercise.\u00a0 I may slack off a bit in the gym from time to time but I have an incentive to work-out.\u00a0 I have to.\u00a0 I need to keep my diabetic heart working. \u00a0A working heart is a loving heart and after all the fighting (see #6), I need to keep the ticker ticking.<\/li>\n<li>I know the carb count in tons of foods other people will never know.\u00a0 I like a lot of weird foods. \u00a0My current new fave is\u00a0Lebanese\u00a0food. \u00a0There&#8217;s a dish that&#8217;s brussel sprouts, grapes, fig jam, walnuts, and mint yogurt. \u00a0I&#8217;m working on the carb count on that one. \u00a0It&#8217;s heaven. \u00a0Heaven needs a carb count.<\/li>\n<li>I have overcome my fear of peeing my pants.\u00a0 I was very ill on a flight (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=11\">That story does still turn my stomach<\/a>).\u00a0 The cannula (tube that goes under my skin) was bent and I got sicker and sicker.\u00a0 I threw-up more than anyone ever should and when I did eventually pee my pants, I wasn\u2019t even upset.\u00a0 Big deal.\u00a0 Babies pee their pants all the time (granted they are wearing diapers and not a knit dress, but hey I had bigger problems).<\/li>\n<li>I hesitantly wrote a blog because I realized there are diabetics (especially parents of diabetics) who might learn a thing or two from my experiences.\u00a0 Diabetes gave me something to talk about.\u00a0 What I didn&#8217;t quite realize was how nice\/encouraging\/ stress relieving it would be to expand my diabetes friend circle.<\/li>\n<li>Recently I responded to a message I saw on twitter, \u00a0It was a request to help a little girl with an insulin pump who found out she had to get glasses.\u00a0 She was worried she would be bullied or \u201cnot pretty\u201d.
