{"id":674,"date":"2013-08-06T15:44:08","date_gmt":"2013-08-06T19:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=674"},"modified":"2013-09-21T11:15:33","modified_gmt":"2013-09-21T15:15:33","slug":"kicking-it-in-nyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=674","title":{"rendered":"Kicking It in NYC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ASC-sign1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-676 alignright\" alt=\"ASC sign1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ASC-sign1-300x218.jpg\" width=\"252\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ASC-sign1-300x218.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ASC-sign1-412x300.jpg 412w, http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ASC-sign1.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a>Let&#8217;s face it, I&#8217;m really not sure there will be a cure for Type 1 Diabetes in my lifetime. \u00a0I do know though,\u00a0<strong>I will absolutely be part of finding the cure for Type 1 Diabetes<\/strong>. \u00a0This dream, idea, vision of mine has grown with intensity as I&#8217;ve gotten older.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been a T1D for 34 years. \u00a0That&#8217;s a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I became involved with JDRF, because of my parents. \u00a0JDRF was their calm in the storm after I was diagnosed in 1979. \u00a0JDRF was still in its infancy at the time, but now stands the\u00a0largest charitable supporter of T1D research. \u00a0JDRF and the families my parents met, managed to give my family\u00a0<strong>HOPE<\/strong>. \u00a0My parents passed this <strong>HOPE<\/strong> along to me. \u00a0At 6 years old, my parents showed me what it&#8217;s like to pour your self into a cause and to\u00a0<strong>BELIEVE<\/strong>. (check out my Mom&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/?p=85\">4-letter word<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, I founded Alecia&#8217;s Stem Cells in New York City with a\u00a0tremendous amount of help from my friends. \u00a0A lot of things have changed in my diabetes world since that time. \u00a0One thing that hasn&#8217;t changed though is that\u00a0<strong>our team is still based on friends and family<\/strong>\u00a0who are willing to sacrifice their time and money (and often lend their creativity). They too will\u00a0<strong>BE part of the Cure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/asc-dodge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-678 alignleft\" alt=\"asc dodge\" src=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/asc-dodge-300x300.jpg\" width=\"126\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/asc-dodge-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/asc-dodge-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/asc-dodge-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.surfacefine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/asc-dodge.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/><\/a>Alecia&#8217;s Stem Cells has had teams walk in Queens, Manhattan\/Brooklyn, Boston and Los Angeles. \u00a0Our team has raised OVER $200,000\u00a0towards JDRF&#8217;s mission to cure diabetes by\u00a0funding crucial research! \u00a0This is incredible and this is because of YOU! \u00a0<strong>YOU too are part of the CURE.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This past November, I was asked to speak along with Michael Strahan at a JDRF NYC Fundraiser. \u00a0It was a fun event but most importantly, it gave me a chance to share my view. \u00a0I got to tell parents of T1D kids about my story. \u00a0How I&#8217;ve been diabetic for 34 years, about how I DO understand how they may be angry that there isn&#8217;t a cure yet, but how\u00a0<strong>I am proof positive of how technology has changed and is advancing diabetes care and\u00a0treatments<\/strong>. \u00a0I told them how I envy their children. I told them that the glucose monitors and insulin pumps I use along with their children simply didn&#8217;t exist when I was their child&#8217;s age. \u00a0I told how to check my glucose levels,I would pee in a cup and add some chemicals and that gave a glucose \u201crange\u201d. \u00a0THAT range that was flawed. \u00a0I showed off my Continuous Glucose monitor that I wore on my arm. \u00a0I explained how\u00a0<strong>these technologies are not a cure BUT they are advances<\/strong>. \u00a0They are advances that come from critical\u00a0research.\u00a0<strong>Research is the key component of JDRF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-prn2\/954762_10200798780865846_163439659_n.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This June, I was honored to be voted to the Board of JDRF NYC. \u00a0At the same time, I also became the Coordinator of JDRF&#8217;s Adult Type 1 Group. \u00a0Both of these opportunities will hopefully enable me to take another step in my NEED to make a difference. \u00a0Government advocacy and peer-to-peer support? \u00a0Yes, sign me up. \u00a0There&#8217;s a third part to this news though. \u00a0<strong>I consider it my diabetes TRIFECTA<\/strong>. \u00a0I&#8217;ve started the process to participate in diabetes clinical trials. \u00a0Maybe Alecia\u2019s Stem Cells should be Alecia\u2019s Lab Rats?<\/p>\n<p>So one last thought, I&#8217;m 40 years old now. \u00a0I think about how someday I won&#8217;t be here anymore, but hey, none of us will. \u00a0I wonder what my legacy will be. \u00a0I hope that my nephew and soon to be either niece or nephew live healthy and happy lives and have families of their own. \u00a0Maybe they will mention me as their creative aunt. \u00a0I HOPE they remember that I always followed my heart. \u00a0I REALLY HOPE they never have to\u00a0worry about T1D in their own children. \u00a0I <strong>HOPE<\/strong> that someday they talk about how their aunt had a friend who told her one time that there are two types of people&#8230; victims, and ass-kickers and their Aunt Alecia was an ass-kicker and yes, she helped cure diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>I am not willing to sit back and wait for change. \u00a0I will be part of it. \u00a0Be part of it with me.
